Also known as the “Mountain of God” to the local Maasai people, it is the only active volcano in Tanzania. It is unique because it is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava.
You should be aware of this one-day hike, as it may be the steepest you have ever completed, with 1600m of elevation in just five kilometers. The round trip takes about 7-12 hrs. The hike starts at about midnight at the base, and you climb through the night and arrive on top for sunrise to avoid the extreme temperatures of this region. You can witness the unique small cones formed by lava at the crater rim.
Today you drive from your departing city, either Moshi or Arusha, to Lake Natron. About a 6-7 hr drive. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for your early morning climb. If you choose, you can walk to the waterfalls and around the Maasai village.
Today will be a very early start at midnight. We will drive you to the volcano's base, where you will start the climb with a local Maasai guide. Enjoy the sunrise from the top of the crater before beginning your descent. Your driver will pick you up from the volcano's base and return to your accommodations. You can then spend the rest of the day relaxing, or if you wish to participate in local activities.
In the morning, you will walk around Lake Natron for the views and to find the thousands of flamingos that use the lake as a breeding ground. Then we depart and drive back to the city.
