The northern circuit route for safaris in Tanzania comprises of four national parks and one Unesco World Heritage Site, all unique and special. All tours start from either Arusha or Moshi.
If you want to experience the lesser travelled parts of the country, whether it is the Mwanza region at Lake Victoria, the southern circuit, or the western circuit. We can always assist with arranging these off the normal circuit routes.

Serengeti National Park
This park is known as “the endless plain,” which is what the word Serengeti translates to in the Maasai language. Often a favourite, it is a must-do experience while on safari. This is where the great migration occurs, where over a million wildebeest and zebras move in the area to find better feeding grounds. This behaviour offers an excellent opportunity to spot the big predators, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, and many more animals. The short grass in the park’s central part allows for excellent spotting of these animals.
- A unique experience that can be done here is a sunrise hot air balloon ride.
Ngorongoro Crater
A unique World Heritage Site is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you will see the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you drive down into the world’s largest inactive volcanic crater, caldera. Inside the crater is a large concentration of animals, all within a small area, making this a great place to spot the big 5. A highlight of the crater is the chance to spot the endangered black rhino, which due to the small size of the crater, is frequently seen.
Tarangire National Park
While this is a lesser-visited park in the area, it is well known for the massive elephant herds that can be seen here and the huge baobab trees. The Tarangire River that runs through here brings many animals to the area, especially during the summer/ dry months of July-October, when elephants and other animals migrate towards the river bank. Also, it is well known for being an excellent birding destination.
Lake Manyara National park
Located between the western slopes of the great rift valley and Lake Manyara, you will find a large diversity of birds, with there being over 300 different species of birds in the area, including thousands of flamingos. The lake is a shallow alkaline lake, which can be visited all year round, although, in the wet season, almost 2⁄3-thirds of the park can be covered by the lake. The famous tree-climbing lions are also often found throughout the forest here.
- A unique experience that can be done here is a walking safari and a canoe safari, allowing you to get out of the safari vehicle to explore the area on foot.
Arusha National Park
Only a 40-minute drive from Arusha City, this park sits at the foot of Mount Meru and its lush forest area. The park may be smaller in size compared to other national parks, but it is famous for its black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. Momella lakes located in the park can often be seen full of flamingos.
- Here you can opt for a hike through the forest with a ranger or canoe on the lake.
