This is the only route that starts on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border. This route has low traffic and is often used by people looking for a more remote wilderness route. The scenery is less varied than other routes on the western slope, but the low traffic on this route and the wilderness experience for most of the ascent will make up for it. It will join the Marangu route on the last day, and then you will descend using the Marangu route.
If travelling in the rainy season, this route is recommended because the mountain’s north side receives less precipitation, allowing for drier conditions than other routes during the rainy season.
This can be done in 6 days, but we recommend the 7-day option for better acclimatization.

Upon arrival, a Mahiri African Tours representative will pick you up and greet you at Kilimanjaro Airport. You will be transferred to your accommodations for the night in Moshi, where you will have a briefing about the trek and a review of your equipment and trekking gear.
Today we start the drive from Moshi to Nalemoru Gate, which takes about 4 hours. Your guide will finalize all necessary paperwork at the gate before the trek begins. As your guide completes registration, you will have lunch before starting the trek. Today's trek will begin with hiking through fields of maize before reaching the forest. Once in the lush, dense rainforest, there is a good chance of seeing black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bush babies. We finish the trek for the night at Simba Camp, where a warm dinner will be made.
Elevation: 2,000m- 2,600m
Distance: 8km
Hiking time: 3-4hrs
Today the trek will continue towards Kikelewa caves, with a steady incline. We will stop at the second cave for a warm lunch and then continue trekking through the moorland and heather zones. Here if weather permits, the views of Kibo Peak can be breathtaking. We will finish the day at Kikelewa caves and have the rest of the day to relax. This campsite is in a sheltered valley.
Elevation: 2,600m - 3,600m
Distance: 10km
Hiking time: 6-7hrs
Today during the trek, the landscape changes as we gain higher elevations. The vegetation will diminish and become more desert. We will arrive at Mawenzi Hut for a warm lunch and a rest. After lunch, there is a small acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi volcano, which we highly recommend participation in not just for some spectacular views but it will help significantly in your body's ability to adjust and acclimatize to the altitude changes.
After the hike towards the Mawenzi volcano, we will return to Mawenzi Tarn for dinner and the night.
Elevation: 3,600m - 4,300m
Distance: 6km
Hiking time: 3-4hrs
Today you will walk through the area known as the saddle. It stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This landscape is dry and barren, often described as a "lunar-like landscape." Once at Kibo Hut, you will rest and prepare for tomorrow. Shortly after dinner, you will sleep, as tonight at midnight, you will start your midnight climb toward the summit.
Elevation: 4,300m - 4,700m
Distance: 9km
Hiking time: 6-7 hrs
Today is your summit night, with a very early start to the day. The trek will start at about midnight as you walk towards the summit, making this your most challenging day on the mountain, between the significant elevation gain to the summit and the significant descent after the summit. Although this route is considered the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it is still extremely difficult, don't underestimate the trek.
The high altitude makes this a very challenging summit night. This will be your most difficult day, but your guides will assist you along the way. The lack of oxygen, the closer you get, will be challenging, and you will need to focus on your breathing. Walking along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, you can see the glaciers covering Kibo up close. After reaching the summit, the amount of time spent here will depend on the weather and your health status at the current time.
You will then descend to Kibo Hut for lunch and a rest. After this, you will pack up your belongings and continue your descent to Horombo Hut. This hut is the final stop of the day, where you will relax for the night and have a delicious dinner as you will be exhausted from the long day.
It is important to go slowly during your descent from the summit and make sure you are watching your footing as you will get tired. The descent is a common place for injuries to occur from falling and losing your footing if moving too fast.
Elevation: 4,700m - 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) - 3,720m
Distance: 16km
Hiking time: 11-12hrs
Today is your last day on the mountain. After breakfast, you will descend to Marangu Gate. You will walk through the beautiful forest before arriving at the gate. At the entrance, you will receive your summit certificate if you successfully summitted Uhuru Peak. Your driver will be waiting for you here and will drive you back to your accommodations for the night.
Elevation: 3,720m- 1,800m
Distance: 19km
Hiking time: 5-6 hrs
Today we will have a driver take you to the airport for your departure flight. If you choose to continue on another tour after your climb, we will take care of that for you to ensure a seamless transition to your next tour.
