This is an alkaline lake boarding with Kenya. The scenery in the area is unique and dramatic, unlike other places in the country. The active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai towers over the area, always in the background. Here you can add an extra day to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai, a unique volcano being the only one in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava.
But the volcano is not the only thing to see here, Lake Natron is also well known to be the primary breeding ground for lesser flamingos in all of East Africa, with thousands migrating here. Another common activity in the area is walking to a waterfall crossing the river while on the trek. This waterfall is warm and worth a swim, but bring water shoes as it can be slippery in the river. This area has a large Maasai community, and if you want to learn and understand more about Maasai culture, it can be done here with a cultural tour.
Lake Natron is an excellent addition to your safari itinerary for a change and to experience less-travelled parts of Tanzania, as roads to get here are often difficult, so fewer companies include this option.
Around Lake Eyasi live the Hadzabe tribe, a hunting-gathering tribe, one of the last surviving in the world. This experience offers a unique opportunity to visit the tribe and participate in their usual daily activities. You can join the men as they hunt with traditional bows and arrows and search for honey, or you can join the woman as they forage for fruits and berries. This tribe also speaks Hadzane, a click language, so listen closely to how they communicate in this very rare language.
This trip is ideal for people who want to include some cultural history in their travel experience while in Tanzania.
These tours can occur within Arusha, Moshi or if wanting to explore while on safari in the northern circuit, the small towns of Mto Wa Mbu and Karatu are good options.
This can be on foot or with transportation, depending on your preferences. On the city tours, you will have the opportunity to learn about African culture and experiences. We will build the tour to your preferences and interests and can vary in length. Local markets, including food and clothes, historic sites, and coffee plantations, are just a few examples. Ensure to have a local beer and nyama choma with your guide for a real authentic African experience, which may be the best way to understand how African life is now.
We can also include a local lunch, to try local food and drinks as part of the local African experience.
